Created by The Robin Hood Foundation in 2001, the Library Initiative Program is on schedule to renovate 56 of the most needy New York City Public School libraries by 2007. The PS 192 Library was carved from a space previously occupied by two classrooms and a group of public restrooms. Book storage is recessed within the three interior walls, while study and reading activities are located along the window-lined north wall. Direct access to an existing courtyard suggested the possibility of a hands-on approach to environmental topics, which provided the impetus to use green materials for various finishes and furniture. It also influenced such design elements as the custom birds-in-flight light fixtures and the blue-sky ceiling/wall graphic.
